Our Story

It was a beautiful Vancouver evening at Jericho beach in the late summer of 2010 when Cheryl wondered out loud to her husband, “What if we started our own cookie company?” After tossing around several other contenders for the company’s name, we settled on “Half Baked” (as in half baked idea!).  Little did we know at the time, how many shortbread cookies we would have tasted, baked and shared with our butter-loving fans all over British Columbia.  Although it hasn’t always been an easy road, we’ve had plenty of fun along the way and made many friends.

Handcrafted in small batches using only the best local and organic ingredients, our shortbread cookies feature locally milled Organic flour and fresh Grade A butter. We now have our very own bakery at 1211 Nanaimo Street, in East Vancouver and we still sell our products at local farmers’ markets and special events in and around the lower mainland. Our cookies are also available in a few local stores where you can find us giving out samples from time to time. It is important to us to be a part of the local food scene, and to connect one-on-one with our customers.  As we continue to grow our business, we look forward to bringing you more seasonal shortbread flavors and desserts to keep you coming back for more.

We want you to feel good about what you eat, which is why every ingredient that goes into what we make has been carefully considered. One of our main goals is to provide treats that are just sweet enough with a hint of salt.

Our Bakery

When I started my business in 2011, I never thought I would have my own bakery.  It always seemed to be a goal just beyond my grasp, so I can’t believe that it has finally come to fruition.  The space on Nanaimo St. became available earlier this year and we decided to take the leap (renovations did not seem as daunting as it previously operated as a bakery).

Our microbakery in East Vancouver on 1211 Nanaimo St. is open year-round for our customers who are addicted to our shortbread cookies.  We also offer a variety of pies and cheesecakes along other baked goods such as drop cookies and biscuits.  I like to think of our desserts as what you’d make at home – we only use natural ingredients such as organic flour, fresh butter, real whipped cream and whole eggs (and as little sugar as possible).  Our products are scratch-baked and should be enjoyed within a day or two of purchase.  We don’t use any stabilizers or artificial ingredients in our baking, which is common in most bakeries that make things in large volume and freeze what they cannot sell right away.  Pie crusts are hand rolled, and cheesecakes all use our signature shortbread for the crust.  We also use locally sourced fruit whenever possible.

Come on by to grab some dessert on the way home from work, or stop in for a slice of pie and fresh coffee.  We offer coffee from Galileo Coffee roasters and loose leaf tea from Karla’s Specialteas and Trudy Ann’s Chai.  You can always order whole pie or cheesecake too for dinner or special occasions, please contact us directly for availability.
